Bloating After Egg Retrieval Is It Normal? Understanding Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)

Bloating After Egg Retrieval… Is It Normal?

Feeling bloated, tight, or noticing your clothes fit a little snug after egg retrieval?

You’re not alone — and in many cases, this is completely normal.

After egg retrieval, the ovaries have just been stimulated and may temporarily enlarge.

They can also become more sensitive to hormones, which can lead to a bloated or uncomfortable feeling for a short time.

However, if the bloating continues to worsen, feels very tight or painful, or is accompanied by shortness of breath, it may be a sign of OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome).

Warning Signs to Watch For After Egg Retrieval

  • Increasing abdominal bloating or discomfort
  • Nausea, abdominal tightness, difficulty breathing or trouble lying flat
  • Rapid or unusual weight gain
  • Decreased urine output
  • If you notice these symptoms, seek medical advice promptly for proper assessment and care

Tips to Help Ease Bloating After Egg Retrieval

  • Stay well hydrated and include more protein in your meals — at least 1.2–1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight per day
  • Avoid salty or highly preserved foods
  • Get enough rest — aim for 7–8 hours of sleep per day

Important Precautions After Egg Retrieval

  • Avoid exercise until next menstrual period begins and abdominal bloating has felt better

In most cases, bloating gradually improves within a few days, depending on each person’s individual response.
